Summer is 3
Summer is now 3 years old. I can't believe how fast time goes by-and that I've been a mom for 3 years. It's hard to imagine life without Summer, yet I know that it did happen once upon a time. Summer's birthday always makes me a little sentimental. I guess it's because her birth marks a large changing point in my life and marks the passage of time for me more than any other event during the year. Our anniversary comes & goes and things still feel the same (since we are obviously not getting older) and the start of a new year is just that, the start of another calendar year, meaning I have to change the numbers I use when writing the date. However, Summer's birthday clearly shows her advancing age, he growing abilities, talents, and personality. I have a feeling that her birthday will forever remind me of that. I wonder if my other children's birthday's will be the same?
My sister was talking about how a friend of hers decided that each stage in life has something negative so when that stage is over, you'll be ready for the next one. You're ready to leave the infant stage so you can get a good nights sleep, you're ready to leave the toddler stage so you no longer have to change diapers, and you're ready for your high school senior to move out so you don't have to live with their constant know-it-all-ness, That way, instead of always missing one stage of life, you learn to enjoy each stage and are then ready for the next one. I believe that's true.
Anyway, back to Summer. Here are a few things about her:
1. Favorite Color: Pink
2. Favorite Foods: grapes, watermelon, quesadillas, pizza, goldfish, & fruit leather
3. Favorite Activities: She loves Farm Country & the Museum at Thanksgiving Point, going to the park, going to the library, reading, singing, listening to music, and painting. She has also very recently discovered that she loves to color. When coloring, she is getting specific with where she wants colors and coloring things specifically. For example, if she has a picture with flowers, she'll color all the flowers one color and then the animal in the picture a different color. The picture below is one she did just a few days ago and a good example of her current skills.
4. She likes to help me at home, including cleaning up her spills, picking food in the garden, and giving Ellen her bath.
5. Favorite Movies/Shows: Tangled, Frozen, & Sesame Street
6. She is picky about her clothes. She decides what she wants to wear each day, she gets tired of her old clothes, and she gets very excited for new ones. What are we going to do when she is a teenager?
7. She is potty trained! Yay! We started at the end of June and after a couple of weeks she was basically there. At this point, I no longer worry about accidents when we're out and about and she is doing great!
8. Summer is our excellent talker. She has started stringing together words in her own sentences instead of just repeating things (although she till does plenty of that). A few things she says:
-I'll be right back
-No, no, no, no, stop
-"Here it coooomes" when going to the bathroom
-"I need my mommy" or "I need my daddy" whenever she wants one of us to help her when she is sad
9. Summer is getting good at saying her prayers. For a while she was being a little resistant to doing it and hadn't done it for a while. Once we convinced her to say it (after a couple of days warning) she said her own prayer, completely unprompted. In it she said thank you for Mom, Dad, Ellen, Grandma & Grandpa on mission, and the Gospel. We had a pretty proud parent moment with that one. She is learning!
10. Often when we are using a public restroom, Summer doesn't like the loud noise of the flushing toilets. To address that problem, she covers her ears with her hands and flushes the toilet with her elbow. It's pretty funny.
11. On that note, Summer doesn't like loud noises. If anything is remotely loud, or makes her uncomfortable, she'll cover her ears with her hands. I often have to convince her to pull her hands down. Without fail, every time we get out of the car, she covers them until I have locked the car and the horn has honked.
12. Summer has graduated to a toddler bed. We're still adjusting, but she is doing much better than she was. The picture below was her last nap in her crib. Notice the blankets all around-she liked to have them up each night, making a little cave.
13. Summer often refers to herself in the third person. We're working on using pronouns, but so far, she rarely uses them.
And finally, here are some stats from her doctors appointment this week:
Height: 38.5 inches, 83rd percentile
Weight: 31 lbs, 53rd percentile
BMI: 14.64, 16th percentile
